X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009) - Movie Review
X-Men Origins: Wolverine - A Loud, Sloppy Mess of a Movie
Rating - 3/10
“I’m the best there is at what I do, but what I do best isn’t very nice.”
If only that line applied to the movie itself. X-Men Origins: Wolverine tries so hard to tell the definitive story of one of Marvel’s most beloved characters, but the result is a muddled and often joyless mess. Hugh Jackman gives it everything he has, grounding the chaos with genuine emotion and physicality, yet even his charisma cannot save this from being one of the most disappointing comic book films of its time.
The film’s biggest sin is its lack of focus. It throws together fragments of Wolverine’s past, sprinkles in mutant cameos for fan service, and then rushes through every interesting idea before it can breathe. The action scenes should be thrilling, but poor choreography and early 2000s CGI turn them into visual clutter. The helicopter explosion scene is especially infamous, not because it’s good, but because it looks like a video game cutscene from a system two generations old.
Then there’s the treatment of Deadpool. What could have been a fascinating pairing of two complex antiheroes ends up as one of the most baffling creative decisions in comic book movie history. Sewing shut the mouth of “the Merc with a Mouth” feels like a cruel joke, and it’s no wonder Ryan Reynolds went on to parody it later in his own films.
Despite its flaws, X-Men Origins: Wolverine still manages to showcase glimmers of what makes Logan great as a character. There’s pain, loss, and that signature rage that Jackman channels perfectly. Unfortunately, everything around him collapses under the weight of a sloppy script and studio interference. For fans of Wolverine, it’s a frustrating watch. For everyone else, it’s a reminder that not all origin stories are worth telling.
