The New Mutants (2020) - Movie Review

The New Mutants - Another Nail in the X-Men Coffin

Rating - 3/10

“You’re not alone anymore.”

The New Mutants had the potential to be something truly unique within the superhero genre, a darker, more psychological take on young mutants discovering their powers and fears. Unfortunately, the final result feels like a jumbled collection of half formed ideas that never quite come together. The film is neither scary enough to be a horror story nor exciting enough to be a true superhero film. It exists somewhere in the middle, lost and unsure of what it wants to be.

The cast actually does a solid job with what they are given. Anya Taylor Joy brings her usual intensity, Maisie Williams gives some genuine heart, and Blu Hunt has moments of sincerity that could have shined under better direction. The problem is that none of these characters get the depth or development they deserve. Their relationships are underwritten and the pacing is so uneven that emotional moments rarely land. What could have been a rich exploration of trauma and identity is instead a watered down sequence of disconnected scenes.

Visually, there are a few interesting shots, and the idea of setting the film within a mysterious institution has potential. However, the execution lacks any real suspense or creativity. The effects often look unfinished, and the tone shifts so awkwardly that it feels like multiple movies stitched together. Even the supposed horror elements are tame and predictable, relying on loud noises and vague nightmares rather than genuine atmosphere or tension.

By the time the story reaches its climax, it is clear that most of the original vision was stripped away during years of studio interference and delays. What remains is a film that feels like a shadow of something that might once have been ambitious. There are glimpses of promise buried underneath the confusion, but not enough to make it work. The New Mutants wastes its cast, its premise, and its chance to bring something new to the X Men universe, leaving audiences with a dull and directionless final product.
