Bohemian Rhapsody - A Rockin' Good Time
Rating - 7/10
“I’m not going to be just a star. I’m going to be a legend.”
Bohemian Rhapsody is a film that soars on the strength of its music and its leading performance, even when the storytelling plays things a little too safe. Rami Malek’s portrayal of Freddie Mercury is magnetic, emotional, and completely transformative. He doesn’t just imitate Mercury, he channels his energy, his insecurities, and his bold charisma in a way that feels both respectful and raw. Every scene he’s in feels electric, and even when the script stumbles, Malek’s performance keeps you invested.
The film captures the spirit of Queen through its music more than its writing. The concert scenes, especially the recreation of Live Aid, are pure cinema magic. They remind you how timeless and powerful Queen’s sound truly is. The energy, the crowd, the vocals, it all comes together in a way that feels euphoric and nostalgic. Even if you know every lyric by heart, hearing those songs on the big screen feels special, and that’s where the movie finds its greatest strength.
Where Bohemian Rhapsody falters is in how it handles the story between the music. The structure is very much the standard biopic formula, early struggles, meteoric rise, internal conflict, redemption. There’s not much risk in how the story is told, and that’s a shame for a band that built its legacy on taking risks. Some of the emotional beats feel simplified or rearranged for drama rather than truth, and while it makes the movie accessible, it also makes it feel manufactured at times.
Still, it’s hard not to have a good time watching it. The music carries everything. From Killer Queen to We Will Rock You, each song brings back memories of what made Queen so iconic in the first place. It may not dive as deeply into Mercury’s complex life as it could have, but it celebrates his talent and passion in a way that connects with audiences of every generation.
Bohemian Rhapsody isn’t a perfect film, but it is an undeniably entertaining one. It’s a tribute wrapped in familiar storytelling, elevated by a career-defining performance and a soundtrack that will never fade from history. Even when it plays things a bit too clean, the power of Queen’s music ensures that the film still hits all the right notes.
