Blue Beetle (2023) - Movie Review
Blue Beetle - Fun and Forgettable
Rating - 7/10
“The universe has sent you a gift, and you have to figure out what you're gonna do with it.”
Blue Beetle is a bright, energetic superhero movie that manages to balance humor, heart, and family while still being weighed down by some of the same formulaic trappings that have come to define the genre. It tells the story of Jaime Reyes, a young man who unexpectedly bonds with an alien scarab that grants him incredible powers, thrusting him into the role of reluctant hero.
Xolo Maridueña delivers a likable and grounded performance as Jaime, bringing real charm and warmth to the role. His chemistry with the rest of the Reyes family gives the movie its emotional core, setting it apart from many other superhero films that often sideline family dynamics. George Lopez, as Jaime’s eccentric uncle Rudy, steals nearly every scene he is in. His comedic timing, enthusiasm, and genuine affection for his family add a ton of personality to the story.
The film shines when it focuses on Jaime’s relationship with his family and his struggles to accept his new identity. There are plenty of fun, flashy action sequences and some great moments of humor, but they are balanced by a sense of sincerity that gives the movie more depth than its surface-level plot might suggest.
Unfortunately, Blue Beetle still falls victim to several familiar superhero clichés. The villains are painfully generic, the story beats are predictable, and it often feels like a movie we have seen before. Despite that, its cultural representation, strong performances, and family-centered storytelling help it stand out just enough to feel fresh. It might not reinvent the superhero wheel, but it spins it with genuine spirit and heart, making it an enjoyable watch for both DC fans and newcomers alike.
