Iron Man 3 (2013) - Movie Review
Iron Man 3 - An Entertaining Mess
Rating - 6/10
"You know, it’s times like these when I realize what a superhero I am."
Iron Man 3 closes out Tony Stark’s solo trilogy with a movie that is fun, entertaining, and filled with action. It has all the energy you would expect from a Marvel movie, with Robert Downey Jr once again carrying the role of Tony Stark with charisma and wit. Yet for all the explosive fights and cool tech, the film stumbles with some of its biggest creative choices, leaving it feeling uneven.
The movie picks up after the events of The Avengers with Tony Stark struggling with anxiety and the weight of being Iron Man. On paper, this is a great direction. Seeing Tony more vulnerable and human could have added depth to his character, and at times it really works. Robert Downey Jr. once again proves he was born for this role, delivering the same sharp wit and charisma that made audiences love him from the start.
The action sequences are exciting, with some standout moments like the attack on Tony’s Malibu mansion and the high altitude rescue scene. The film keeps the pace moving and never feels boring. In that sense, Iron Man 3 succeeds in giving audiences a flashy, explosive blockbuster.
But the problems are hard to ignore. The plot holes are so large that it's impossible not to fall into them. The villain is weak and the famous Mandarin twist is one of the biggest letdowns in the MCU. The build up to the Mandarin was genuinely great, with trailers and early scenes painting him as a terrifying and powerful enemy. To have that all thrown away as a joke undercuts the stakes and leaves the story feeling hollow. Combine that with plot holes and story decisions that do not make much sense, and the film ends up feeling messy. These plot holes are honestly ridiculous. Stark waiting until the end to reveal his 40+ Iron Man suits, giving a terrorist his home address on live TV, the Iron Patriot being allowed onto Air Force One without any clearance whatsoever, the Avengers and Nick Fury not showing up at all....I could go on.
Iron Man 3 is fun and entertaining thanks to the help RDJ and The Avengers as it's launchpad. However, there are just so many faults that are hard to forgive. It feels like they had a great ideas that were done wrong and wrapped up in a bad plot twist. Overall, it's a mess.
