John Wick (2014) - Movie Review

John Wick - Exactly what we want from a Good Action Movie

Rating - 8/10

"People keep asking if I’m back… Yeah, I’m thinkin’ I’m back."

Some action movies are loud, messy, and forgettable. John Wick is none of those things. Released in 2014, this Keanu Reeves–led revenge thriller redefined modern action filmmaking with its sleek choreography, sharp world-building, and an unexpectedly emotional core.

The setup is simple but powerful. John Wick is a retired hitman mourning the loss of his wife. When a group of careless thugs steals his car and kills the puppy she left him, they unknowingly reignite the fury of one of the most feared assassins in the criminal underworld. What follows is a beautifully brutal rampage fueled by grief, precision, and sheer determination.

Keanu Reeves delivers one of his most memorable performances here. His stoic, deliberate portrayal gives John Wick an almost mythic presence, yet there’s still a human vulnerability underneath the bullets and black suits. The supporting cast—Michael Nyqvist, Willem Dafoe, Ian McShane, and Lance Reddick add depth to the film’s shadowy assassin world, making it feel bigger than just a revenge story.

What really sets John Wick apart is its action. Directors Chad Stahelski and David Leitch choreograph gunfights and hand-to-hand combat like dance sequences. Long takes, clean framing, and practical stunt work make every scene easy to follow and more impactful than the quick-cut chaos of most Hollywood action films. The neon-soaked cinematography and pulsing soundtrack give the movie a stylish, almost graphic novel–like quality.

It is not flawless. The story is straightforward, and if you are not drawn in by its hyper-stylized violence, it may feel repetitive in the middle stretch. Still, its tight pacing and unwavering commitment to its tone keep it from dragging.

John Wick is a slick, stylish action film that knows exactly what it wants to be and executes it with precision. For fans of revenge thrillers, tight stunt work, and Keanu Reeves at his best, it is an essential watch and the start of one of the most consistent action franchises in recent memory.
