Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018) - Movie Review
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse - A Masterpiece in Animated Storytelling
Rating - 10/10
“Thats all it is Miles. A leap of faith.”
Sony took a great leap of faith with this movie, and it paid off big time. 'Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse' elevates animation, superhero films, and great storytelling to heights so great that it redefined what all of these things can be. If you're one of the few people who somehow haven't seen this movie, you're missing out on a cinematic masterpiece that may very well be the best animated feature ever made.
Rather than telling the same Peter Parker story that we're all used to, we are introduced to Miles Morales; afresh new take on Spider-Man. Yet the movie doesn't forget the original as there are more than one Peter Parker in the story as well. In fact. thanks to this actual successful use of the multiverse, we are greeted to many unique versions of the Spider-Man. When the multiverse opens up to new worlds, Miles must take on his new mantle to save his world.
What we all expected was just some animated Spider-Man movie we'd pass on, until a few people spoke out to say it was the best Spider-Man film ever made. That's a tall order, but worth investigating. What we were then treated to is a comic book movie finally done right. From the very first frame, the animation feels alive. The film’s unique blend of CGI and hand-drawn techniques creates a moving comic book right before your eyes. Every frame is filled with bold colors, exaggerated motion, and little details—like comic book halftones and speech bubbles—that pay homage to Spider-Man’s roots while pushing animation forward. It’s not just eye candy; it’s an art form.
Before multiverses became Hollywood’s favorite buzzword, this movie nailed the concept. Each Spider-Person (or Spider-Ham) is distinct, with their own personality, style, and story. The way these characters interact brings humor, depth, and a sense of unity despite their differences. It’s diversity done beautifully, both visually and thematically.
Rarely do we get a movie that excels in every category—story, characters, visuals, music, and emotional weight. Into the Spider-Verse manages to do all that while also breaking boundaries and setting new standards for animated films and superhero movies alike. It’s funny, heartfelt, visually stunning, and endlessly rewatchable. By the end of the film we don't just feel entertained, we feel inspired.
