Captain Marvel (2019) - Movie Review

Captain Marvel - Just Fine, but only Necessary for Endgame

Rating - 6/10

"Higher, further, faster, baby."

Captain Marvel is an important entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, giving audiences their first full look at Carol Danvers and setting the stage for her role in the events to come. The movie does not deserve the excessive hate it received online, much of which came from people unwilling to give it a fair chance. At its core, this is a solid superhero origin story that introduces a powerful new character while exploring themes of identity, strength, and belonging.

Brie Larson delivers a capable performance as Carol Danvers, balancing determination with moments of levity, and her chemistry with Samuel L. Jackson’s younger Nick Fury adds a welcome buddy-cop feel to parts of the movie. The 1990s setting provides some fun nostalgia, from Blockbuster Video to the soundtrack, and the inclusion of the Skrulls adds an interesting layer to the story.

However, the film never quite soars the way it seems like it could. The villains are underwhelming and lack a truly memorable presence, leaving the central conflict feeling a bit hollow. The pacing also struggles at times, with the story taking a while to find its footing before the action really kicks in. By the time it hits its stride, it is already leaning heavily on its connection to the upcoming Avengers: Endgame, which overshadows some of its own narrative weight.

Captain Marvel is by no means a bad film, and it plays its role in the MCU well enough, but it rarely rises above being simply fine. It gives fans a powerful new hero to root for, adds some key pieces to the overarching Marvel story, and offers a few standout moments — but it ultimately feels more like a setup for what comes next than a fully satisfying adventure on its own.
