Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga (2024) - Movie Review

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga - A Furious Spin-off

Rating - 8/10

“Where are you going?” “Home.”

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga is a worthy addition to George Miller’s wasteland, delivering a gritty and tragic origin story for one of the most memorable characters in the Fury Road universe. The movie works best as a character-driven epic, chronicling Furiosa’s journey from her stolen childhood to becoming the hardened warrior audiences know. It is not as relentlessly action-packed as Fury Road, but it makes up for it with scale, world-building, and strong performances.

Anya Taylor-Joy and Alyla Browne share the mantle of Furiosa, and together they create a layered portrait of survival and determination. Both manage to capture the strength and intelligence of the character while also reminding us of the humanity beneath all the grit. Chris Hemsworth is surprisingly great as Dementus, playing a flamboyant yet terrifying warlord who is both absurd and menacing. His presence adds unpredictability to every scene, and his clashes with Furiosa give the movie its emotional weight.

The action, while not as nonstop as Fury Road, is still jaw-dropping when it hits. Miller stages massive, practical-heavy set pieces that feel dangerous and raw, and the cinematography once again makes the wasteland look hauntingly beautiful. Although there is much more CGI this time around. The film also dives deeper into the politics and shifting power struggles of this broken world, fleshing out the hierarchy of Immortan Joe’s Citadel and the chaos that surrounds it.

If there is one weakness, it is pacing. The movie runs long, and some sections feel stretched thin compared to the tight momentum of Fury Road. Still, the slower beats allow more time for character development, which pays off in the end.

Overall, Furiosa does justice to its title character. It is brutal, emotional, and at times oddly poetic, showing how pain and survival can forge someone into a legend. It may not outshine Fury Road, but it stands tall on its own and proves that Miller still has plenty of fire left in this world.
