Puss in Boots: The Last Wish (2022) - Movie Review

Puss in Boots: The Last Wish - A Shockingly Amazing Sequel

Rating - 9/10

"I will never stop fighting for this life."

Puss in Boots: The Last Wish is one of those rare animated sequels that not only surpasses expectations but also feels like it breathes new life into the franchise it came from. This movie is excellent from start to finish, blending heartfelt storytelling, dazzling animation, and some of the best villains we have seen in an animated film in years. It comes so close to perfection, only missing the mark due to a few minor plot conveniences and some slower moments in the middle, but everything else more than makes up for it.

The story is surprisingly emotional, diving into themes of mortality, second chances, and what truly makes life worth living. For a film about a swashbuckling cat, it manages to carry some heavy weight while still being accessible to kids and adults alike. The action sequences are visually stunning, using a painterly style that makes each fight feel like a moving work of art. Every duel is sharp, kinetic, and full of energy, making this one of the most exciting animated films in recent memory.

The comedy works just as well, with clever writing and great timing that never feels overdone. Puss himself continues to be as charming as ever, but the supporting cast really shines here. Perrito is an adorable and hilarious addition, bringing both laughs and heart to the group dynamic.

But what sets The Last Wish apart are its villains. The film juggles multiple antagonists, something that would completely derail a lesser movie, yet here it works beautifully. Each one brings something different to the table. Death, in particular, is terrifying and awesome, a chilling presence whose whistle alone is enough to send shivers down your spine. Big Jack Horner is over-the-top and hilarious, giving the movie some of its wildest comedic moments. And then there is Goldilocks and the Three Bears, who bring unexpected depth and nuance to their roles, creating one of the most layered storylines in the film.

The voice acting across the board is phenomenal, with each actor breathing life and personality into their characters. Combined with the sharp writing, it makes every scene engaging, whether it is dramatic, action-packed, or comedic.

Puss in Boots: The Last Wish proves that animated films can be just as ambitious, emotional, and memorable as any live action blockbuster. It is a movie that manages to be fun and heartfelt while exploring themes that linger long after the credits roll. If it were not for a couple of small hiccups in pacing and convenience, this would have been an easy perfect score. Still, it is an outstanding achievement in animation and storytelling, and one of the best surprises in recent years.
