Klaus (2019) - Movie Review
Klaus - A Modern Christmas Classic
Rating - 9/10
“A true act of goodwill always sparks another.”
Klaus is one of those rare animated films that feels timeless from the moment you watch it. The story is heartwarming without ever getting too sugary, the comedy is smart, and the performances from the voice cast bring every character to life in a way that feels genuine. It is both hilarious and touching, a perfect combination for a holiday movie.
The voice acting across the board is excellent. Jason Schwartzman nails the spoiled yet redeemable postman Jesper, Rashida Jones adds warmth and strength as Alva, and J. K. Simmons brings quiet power to Klaus himself. Their chemistry creates an emotional foundation that makes the film’s message resonate far more deeply than you might expect from an animated Christmas story.
The story itself is crafted with care. It is a reimagining of the Santa Claus legend, told with fresh creativity while still holding onto the magic of tradition. The film balances humor and heart effortlessly, giving you plenty of laughs while building to genuinely moving moments. By the time the emotional beats hit, you realize just how attached you have become to these characters.
One of the most striking things about Klaus is the animation. The hand drawn style is spectacular, with lighting and textures that give it a depth rarely seen in modern animation. It feels classic yet modern at the same time, and every frame looks like it could be a painting. This choice gives the film a unique identity and adds to its charm in a big way.
It is hard to find much to criticize. Maybe it moves a little slower in a few spots, but those moments never take away from the overall experience. What Klaus delivers is a story about kindness, redemption, and the way small acts can grow into something much bigger. It is funny, emotional, beautifully made, and destined to be rewatched every holiday season.
