The Marvels (2023) - Movie Review

The Marvels - A Bland Checklist Movie for the MCU

Rating - 4/10

“Higher, further, faster, together.”

The Marvels is another stumble for the MCU, and one that feels especially disappointing given the potential of its cast. On paper, teaming up Captain Marvel, Monica Rambeau, and Ms. Marvel should have been a recipe for a fun, energetic adventure. Instead, what we get is a bland, uneven film that struggles to find its footing.

The biggest issue here is the villain. Forgettable in every sense of the word, they never feel like a real threat or leave any lasting impression. In a universe filled with larger than life antagonists, this one barely registers. A weak villain drags the whole movie down, and it is hard to stay invested when the stakes feel so low.

The much talked about musical planet sequence deserves mention, but unfortunately not for the right reasons. It is awkward, cringy, and grinds the pacing to a halt. Instead of adding variety or creativity to the story, it feels more like a gimmick that never pays off.

Visually, the film is serviceable, but nothing about the action or effects feels fresh or memorable. Too much of it comes across as standard Marvel formula without the spark that made earlier MCU films shine.

What saves The Marvels from being a complete disaster is Iman Vellani as Ms. Marvel. She is easily the brightest spot in the film, bringing energy, humor, and charm every time she is on screen. You can tell she is giving it her all, and she makes her character feel alive in ways the rest of the movie struggles to match.

Overall, The Marvels is a forgettable entry in the MCU. It is not offensively bad, but it is bland, weighed down by a weak villain, poor creative choices, and uneven execution. Ms. Marvel deserves a better movie than this one, and hopefully she will get it in the future.
