Sonic the Hedgehog (2020) - Movie Review

Sonic The Hedgehog - Jim Careys the Movie

Rating - 6/10

"Gotta Go Fast"

Sonic the Hedgehog is a fun little kids movie that delivers more charm than it probably had any right to. The story is straightforward and nothing groundbreaking, but it moves along at a quick pace and never takes itself too seriously. That works in its favor, especially for the younger audience it is aiming for. There are plenty of jokes, action scenes, and lighthearted moments to keep kids entertained, while adults can still find some enjoyment in the nostalgia and energy of the film.

The real standout here is Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik. His performance is completely unhinged in the best possible way, stealing every scene he is in. He brings the kind of wacky, over the top energy that only Carrey can pull off, and it gives the movie the personality it desperately needs. Without him, this film would have been much less memorable.

One of the most interesting things about Sonic the Hedgehog is how much it benefited from listening to its fans. When the original design of Sonic was revealed, the response was overwhelmingly negative. The character looked creepy and wrong, and fans were vocal about their disappointment. To the studio’s credit, they listened. The redesign made Sonic look like Sonic, and that change single handedly saved this movie. It is rare to see that kind of fan influence pay off so directly, but in this case it worked.

The animation for Sonic blends well enough with the live action world, the side characters are serviceable, and while the film does not push storytelling boundaries, it has its heart in the right place. As a kids movie, it succeeds. It is silly, colorful, and energetic. For adults, it may not be a masterpiece, but there is enough fun to make it worth the watch, especially if you grew up playing the games.

In the end, Sonic the Hedgehog works because it knows what it is. A goofy, fast paced family film that leans on nostalgia and Jim Carrey’s hilarity to win audiences over. It is not perfect, but it is far from the disaster it could have been, and that makes it an easy one to revisit with kids or just for some lighthearted fun.
