Stranger Thing: Season 3 (2019)

Stranger Things: Season 3 - A Fun, Messy Time

Rating - 7/10

“If you don’t mind, I’m going to keep yelling at you.”

Season three of Stranger Things arrives with a brighter, louder, more chaotic energy than the previous seasons, and that shift creates both its strengths and its weaknesses. It still carries the heart and spirit of the series, but it leans a bit more into camp and comedy in ways that sometimes feel a little too forced. Some jokes land, but others feel like they are trying too hard to recapture the effortless charm of earlier seasons. Even so, the core remains strong enough to carry the story forward with plenty of entertainment.

The upside is that the series does not lose its grasp on horror. Season three may be more colorful with its mall setting and summer adventure tone, but the gross and extremely goorey body horror elements are some of the nastiest the show has ever done. The Mind Flayer’s new form is unsettling and well crafted, pushing the practical and visual effects in a creepy direction that keeps the tension alive. Whenever the show leans into its darker side, it still shines.

The cast continues to carry the emotional weight of the story, and the new characters add meaningful texture. Robin quickly became a fan favorite with her sharp wit and grounded personality, balancing out Steve’s delightful growth as one of the show’s best characters. Erica adds humor while also expanding the world beyond the main group. Even characters who were previously more one note begin to evolve, giving the ensemble a richer dynamic as their relationships deepen and shift.

Where the season struggles is in pacing and tone. The campiness can be fun, but at times it clashes with the horror elements and emotional beats. Some storylines feel stretched or exaggerated, and the tonal whiplash can make the season feel slightly less cohesive than its predecessors. Still, the finale brings everything together with a strong emotional punch and memorable action, reminding viewers why the series remains so beloved.

Season three is a bit of a dip, but still a very enjoyable chapter in the Stranger Things saga. It delivers spectacle, heart, and horror, even if it occasionally leans too far into over the top humor. The world expands, the characters grow, and the show remains engaging enough to keep fans invested as it heads toward darker territory.
