Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (2024) - Movie Review

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 - The Best One Yet?!

Rating - 8/10

“You’re comparing yourself to me? Ha! You’re not even good enough to be my fake.”

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is easily the strongest entry in this series so far. While the first two movies leaned heavily on fun antics and family-friendly comedy, this one takes a real step up in its storytelling. The movie gives Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles a more focused journey while finally introducing Shadow in a way that fans of the games have been waiting for. Shadow’s presence feels true to the source material, capturing his edge and intensity without losing sight of the fun tone the films are known for.

Jim Carrey returns as Robotnik, and he is somehow even funnier this time around. Playing two versions of the character lets him fully unleash his manic energy, and it never feels stale. His scenes are a constant highlight and show that Carrey is still unmatched when it comes to this kind of cartoonish villainy.

What makes this film stand out are the details and the way it embraces the games. The easter eggs are everywhere, from level designs in the action sequences to small nods for longtime fans to spot. It feels like a love letter to the franchise while also working as a big popcorn movie for audiences who have never touched a controller.

The action set pieces are bigger and bolder than anything in the first two movies. Sonic and Shadow’s clashes are visually exciting and carry real weight thanks to how well Shadow is handled as a character. It is not just a battle of speed and power, it is a clash of ideals, which gives the movie a more meaningful core than the previous outings.

The heart and humor are still there too. Sonic’s dynamic with Tails and Knuckles continues to work well, and the comedic beats hit without taking away from the bigger stakes. By balancing character growth, nostalgia, and over-the-top fun, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 manages to feel both exciting and heartfelt.

It is not perfect, of course. Some of the side characters are underused and certain jokes go on longer than they need to. But compared to the first two films, this feels like a huge leap forward in quality and confidence.

Overall, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 captures what makes the franchise special while telling a story that is bigger and better than what came before. Shadow is brought to life in a way that will make fans cheer, Carrey is at the top of his game, and the movie has enough heart and fun to make it a blast from start to finish. It's truly wild that we went from complaining about the original design of Sonic from the first movie, to the third movie being the best one. That does not happen evey
